Ian McKinnell's Solo Exhibition - Altered Images

The viewer is invited to bring their own imagination to my works. They are pure abstracts, found images of colours, surfaces, textures, sometime much as I found them but often “taken for a walk”, to borrow a phrase. The viewer is invited to see whatever you wish in there. I have at times attempted to add hooks for the viewer: “Horizon lines”, “Imagined Landscapes”, “disrupted views” but really, you can read whatever you wish into them.

My eye is drawn to the abstract, and I take delight in exploring how far I can transform an image to create a different way of seeing. However, although the result I strive for is an abstract, I like to work from images of the real world. In this way, my images retain an organic “memory” of the world which provides a hook for the viewer.

Some of my work is very physical in construction, consisting of multiple, collaged or float mounted images, things cut-up and other mixed-media as well as scanned material; so perhaps not digital at all.
